Mixer Takeaways: Our Best Advice

by Mara Keller, Senior Emerging Media Specialist

Thanks to everyone who came to our Agency Mixer + Tour! It was great meeting everyone. If you missed it or want a refresher, we’ve gathered our top ten pieces of advice for recent grads and young professionals:

  • Don’t fall in love with the idea of working at an agency; fall in love with doing amazing work.
  • Do informational interviews. Use the opportunity to learn about their career, how they got to where they are, and pick their brain for useful tips and insights into the industry.
  • Remember to foster your relationship with a few key people you’ve networked with and touch base with them every so often. These people will advocate for you over that person you met that one time.
  • Don’t forget to network with your peers. Treat each project like an opportunity to put your best foot forward. They can vouch for your work ethic and one day may be making the hiring decisions.
  • Take a stats class. Learn what the data is really saying and what story it tells.
  • Become a master in Excel. It will help immensely.
  • Details matter. Check and double-check your work. Nothing undermines your credibility more than making the same mistakes over and over again.
  • When interviewing, think about the value you add. Highlight what you can bring to the agency rather than what the agency can do for you.
  • Find a good manager. Questions to ask yourself: how much autonomy do you want? What’s their personality like? Does that match with yours? Someone with a managerial style that fits you will set you up for success.
  • Finally, learn from those who came before you. Look at how they approach challenges both strategically and creatively.
